Cooler, threat of t-storms increasing

TUESDAY JUNE 30….5:18 AM….High temperatures across the Tahoe region should be a bit cooler today as the ridge of high pressure that has been baking Northern California and Nevada is weakening just a tad. A flow of moist air coming up from the south will feed into the development of afternoon thunderstorms south of Tahoe, increasing Wednesday and Thursday. Around the basin itself we will probably see mainly the growth of cumulus clouds but fewer thunderstorms. Highs will fluctuate around 80 for the rest of the week near the Lake, around 70 at higher elevations, before cooling some more over the weekend or early next week. In the longer term, a trough of low pressure from the Pacific Northwest is aimed at the region early next week and should cool temperatures back down to normal if not below.

Hot, chance of T-storms increasing

MONDAY JUNE 29….5:28 AM….The heat wave that’s been baking the Tahoe region and most of California and Nevada since the weekend will continue today, but we should begin to see the first glimpse of a slow return to normal summertime temperatures. The high pressure ridge that is responsible for the hot conditions is shifting eastward and is forecast to move a little bit more to the east each day this week. That will allow upper level moisture to seep into the picture, bringing cooler temperatures and a renewed threat of thunderstorms. The chance for thunderstorms will increase each day through Wednesday, starting well south of Tahoe in Alpine County and moving north each day, mainly along the crest. Long range, a more dramatic cooling trend may be in store for next weekend as a trough of low pressure approaches the Pacific Northwest and has a chance to bring a return to at least normal if not below-normal temperatures to the Tahoe Basin.

Warmer today, some thunderheads near the crest

SUNDAY JUNE 28…5:25 AM….Today should be just a little bit warmer than Saturday but otherwise pretty much the same. A ridge of high pressure over the Great Basin and California will continue to bake the entire region. One difference: we might begin to see the formation of a few thunderheads along the Sierra crest today, especially south of Lake Tahoe, where conditions will be most favorable for convection. But it looks as if those clouds will yield little if anything in the way of moisture.
