Another windy day in Tahoe

MONDAY, AUGUST 31, 5:18 AM….Today looks like another windy day in Tahoe, but the gusts should be a bit lighter than Sunday and perhaps fewer and far between. The highest winds will be along the Sierra Crest, with gusts up to 25 mph at the passes and stronger at the higher elevations. Temperatures should remain about the same as Sunday and perhaps drop a degree or two, with highs around 70 at the Lake. A weak, upper-level disturbance is passing through Northern California today and is expected to increase humidity levels a bit from the weekend’s extremely dry readings. That should help to moderate the fire danger even as the winds continue. By Tuesday a ridge of high pressure across the west should begin lifting temperatures again but the winds should subside.

Breezy today and cooler

SUNDAY, AUGUST 30, 5:18 AM….Today is shaping up to be a breezy one across the Tahoe Basin, especially along the crest. A low pressure system spinning through Oregon on its way to Idaho is creating windy conditions for Northern California and Nevada, with winds of 15 to 20 mph out of the west and southwest and gusts up to 35 mph. A Lake Wind Advisory has been issued for Lake Tahoe, where waves of 2 to 4 feet are possible. Temperatures, meanwhile, should drop a bit today off Saturday’s highs, and a little bit more on Monday. But look for a new warming trend to kick in early this week as a ridge of high pressure rebuilds over the western United States and begins to bake us below its lid.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 29, 5:18 AM….Mostly clear skies should prevail across the Tahoe Basin and northern Sierra today. A low pressure trough that spun off a larger weather system in the Pacific Northwest has moved north and east of Tahoe, leaving behind a piece of energy that is sitting off the Central California coast. The main effect from this system so far has been to halt the upward march of temperatures and bring just a slight cooling, especially for far northern California. But the southern boundary of the system has been north of Interstate-80, and south of there, the air has remained dry and warm. As the leftover energy spins over Central California today we could see some thunderheads building south of Tahoe, but those should not affect the basin, either. The larger system will spin through Oregon again on Sunday, and the remnants of that activity should cool our temperatures a little bit further. Finally, while most of the smoke that drifted north from Yosemite yesterday should be gone this morning, the resumption of west winds later today could push it back again, especially south of Highway 50. But overall, expect another pleasant summer day, and weekend, in Tahoe. Enjoy.
