Warmer weekend in store

FRIDAY APRIL 30, 5:30 AM….A warming trend is in store for the weekend in Tahoe as we squeeze in a few spring-like days between blasts of winter-like weather. Temperatures will not be soaring but they should return to normal by Sunday and hang there at least into Monday. A few snow showers from the western edge of the system that departed Thursday are still possible today along the eastern slope of the Sierra, mostly south of Tahoe, before things clear out for good on Saturday.

The next low pressure system is due to hit the region by Tuesday or Wednesday. It should bring a return to cool, windy weather, but precipitation will be light as this system is quite dry.

Stay tuned for details.

Chilly with snow showers today

THURSDAY APRIL 29, 5:20 AM….A winter-like storm that brought more than a foot of snow to the Tahoe region this week is edging its way east, but one final piece of energy swirling off the main low pressure system will keep the Basin’s weather unsettled today. Continued cold temperatures and scattered snow showers are in the forecast for the rest of today and into tonight, with the chance for a few scattered showers even lingering into Friday. Temperatures will barely get above freezing today around the Lake and will struggle to get out of the 20s at 7000 feet.

But by Friday morning a ridge of high pressure will be building over the west, opening the door to what should be a seasonably pleasant spring weekend. Temperatures will rebound toward normal by Sunday and likely hold steady into Monday.

The see-saw weather is forecast to continue next week as another cold front approaches from the Pacific Northwest. This one is looking drier than the storm systems that have dominated our mid-week weather each of the past two weeks. But it will be cold and carry the chance of at least some precipitation. It should be moving into Tahoe by next Tuesday.

More snow possible today, Thursday

WEDNESDAY APRIL 28, 5:02 AM….The strongest energy from a cold, winter like storm that brought rain and snow to Tahoe on Tuesday has moved to the south and east, but the weather will remain unsettled for the next few days. An upper level troough of low pressure is still parked off the coast and will spin two more waves of potential precipitation over the Sierra today and Thursday night.

Neither of these systems is expected to produce major accumulations of new snow, but combined they could leave several more inches at the higher elevations of the region. The main effect will be cooler temperatures. Highs will be 15 to 20 degrees below normal for this time of year through Thursday. Winds will also be brisk today, with gusts over 30 mph. A lake wind advisory is in effect for Lake Tahoe.

By Friday a ridge of high pressure will begin to build over the west, bringing a warming trend for the weekend.
