Cooler today, unsettled week ahead

MONDAY MAY 31, 5:06 AM…One of the cooler months of May in many years is coming to a close today. And it will be cooler than yesterday.
A low pressure system spinning of a deep low in the Gulf of Alaska will be sweeping through the Sierra this afternoon and is expected to bring increasing clouds, wind and a chance of rain to the region.
The system is sagging a little further south than originally forecast, increasing the chance of rain tonight and Tuesday as far south as Highway 50. Snow levels will be quite high, above 9,000 feet, so any precipitation we get in Tahoe will fall as rain.
One or two more weak systems are forecast to spin from this low later in the week, keeping conditions unsettled and postponing the warming trend that appeared to be in the offing a few days ago.
It now appears likely that Reno ’s airport will not reach 80 degrees today. This would be only the fourth time since records have been kept there that this has been the case. The other years were 1953, 1971 and 1998. Sacramento, meanwhile, reached 90 degrees on Sunday for the first time this year. The last time the Capital City entered June without a 90 degree day was 1971.

Warmer today, then cooler Monday

SUNDAY, MAY 30, 6:06 AM…Today should be a little warmer across Tahoe than Saturday as a ridge of high pressure builds above Northern California and Nevada.
But the warming trend will take a break on Monday and Tuesday when a low pressure system out of the Pacific Northwest dives through Northern California on its way east. Rain is likely near the Oregon border Monday and Tuesday and as far south as the Northern Sierra.
At this time it appears that Tahoe will see mainly cloud cover from this system and a modest dip in temperatures. But it is possible that we could see a few rain showers on Tuesday, especially toward the north.
By Wednesday the warming trend should resume, with temperatures climbing above normal by the end of the week.

Finally. It will feel like spring

SATURDAY, MAY 29, 5:26 AM…A low-pressure system that brought rain and snow to the Tahoe region has moved to the east, just in time to usher in a warm and pleasant Memorial Day Weekend.
Temperatures should be 10 to 15 degrees higher today, and even higher on Sunday. Monday might cool down a notch as a little storm system sweeps through far Northern California with the potential to spread some high clouds, but not much else, into the Tahoe Basin.
One measure of how cool the spring has been for Northern California and Nevada: Reno’s airport might not reach 80 degrees by the end of May on Monday. This would be only the fourth time since records have been kept there that this has been the case. The other years were 1953, 1971 and 1998. Sacramento, meanwhile, hasn’t yet reached 90 degrees. The last time the Capital City entered June without a 90 degree day was 1971.
