Cooler today, through Friday

WEDNESDAY JUNE 30 5:21 am….A cooling trend brought about by the presence of a trough of low pressure off the Pacific Coast will bring temperatures back down to around 70 near Lake Tahoe today and the low 60s at the higher elevations. Winds will also kick up today, and a high wind advisory has been posted for the Lake. Winds will be 15 mph to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph.

Thursday should be about the same, and Friday could even be a tick or two cooler as the trough moves eastward. The northern Sierra north of Tahoe might even see a little but of rain. But another ridge of high pressure is forecast to begin building this weekend, and temperatures should start climbing again. Sunday and Monday will be warm.

Some moisture moving into the area early next week looks to increase the threat of thunderstorms across the Sierra. We will keep an eye on that.

Hot today before cooling on Wednesday

TUESDAY JUNE 29 4:51 am….Temperatures should have peaked Monday across the Tahoe Basin as we begin to feel the first effects of a trough of low pressure settling south along the Pacific Coast from the Northwest. Highs should remain about the same as yesterday or perhaps a degree or two cooler. Temperatures will likely be in the low 80s along the Lake and the 70s at higher elevations.

By Wednesday afternoon highs are forecast to dip a few degrees while still remaining above normal for the final week of June. Cooler but dry air from the trough will be moving across the Sierra and Tahoe. Except perhaps some afternoon thunderstorms, no precipitation is in the forecast.

Once this disturbance passes through on Thursday we expect to see temperatures climbing again for the weekend.

Hot today but cooling trend coming

MONDAY JUNE 28, 4:36 AM…Hot weather is in the forecast again today for the Tahoe Basin, even as the high pressure that’s been sitting over the region shifts a bit to the east. That shift will be the first step that will eventually usher in a cooling trend by the middle of the week.

A low pressure system out of the Gulf of Alaska will move south and east today and Tuesday, filling the vacuum left by the eastward shift of the ridge. At first that change will bring us only drier air aloft, reducing the threat of thunderstorms. But highs should remain in the 80s around The Lake and in the 70s at higher elevations.

By Tuesday or Wednesday we should see cooler temperatures as well, with highs returning to near normal for this time of year. The cooling trend will last through Friday. The Independence Day Weekend is looking warmer, but so far we do not appear to have a scorcher on tap.
