Crazy about this place

First warmer, then cooler

TUESDAY AUGUST 31…6:22 AM…Moderation will be the theme for Tahoe’s weather over the next several days.

A slowly building warming trend is in the offing at the moment as an area of high pressure builds over the west. Each of the next few days, through Thursday, should be warmer than the last, with temperatures topping out at just above normal for early September by the end of the week. We will likely see some east or northeast winds, with gusts along the ridges topping out at around 30 mph. Dry conditions should prevail.

Temperatures are forecast to peak on Friday before we see the reverse — a slow cooling trend. The ridge of high pressure will be kicked east as a trough of low pressure forms over the Pacific Northwest and moves south and east and begins to affect the Sierra’s weather. Temperatures should cool a tick or two over the weekend — not as much as last weekend but probably below normal for Labor Day.

So, first a little warmer, then a little cooler. Sounds good to us.

Stay tuned for details as conditions change.

Warmer days, colder nights

MONDAY AUGUST 30…5:22 AM…Temperatures should begin to warm today across the Sierra and the Tahoe Basin as a cold front an the trough that brought it here move to the east. An area of high pressure will build over the region and begin to bake the Basin beneath it.

High temperatures should rise between 5 and 10 degrees today and again on Tuesday, but clearing skies will mean rapid cooling in the evening. We could see overnight lows at or below freezing in the mountain valleys. The moisture from the weekend will also mean a chance of fog in the valleys. By Wednesday conditions should be back to normal for this time of year, and Thursday should be warm as well.

But things will likely peak there, as another trough of low pressure is forecast to form off the coast. The next cooling trend should not be as severe as the one that hit us over the weekend. But it will definitely hit the pause button on the warm-up.

Stay tuned for details as conditions change.

Cold today, rain and snow possible

SUNDAY AUGUST 29…6:22 AM…Tahoe’s unseasonably cold weather will continue today as a wave of energy from a deep Pacific trough moves through the Sierra and into Nevada. Temperatures will likely dip another few degrees today, and we could see some showers and thunderstorms this morning and this afternoon as the front passes through. Any downpours are likely to be scattered and brief, but there is still a chance of light snow on the highest peaks around the Basin.

By Monday temperatures should be bouncing back and by Tuesday the region’s weather should be back to normal for this time of year. An area of high pressure will build and warm the Basin again. But another trough is looming for the end of the week. Probably not another serious cold front like this one, but enough to break any hot spell.

Stay tuned for details as conditions change.
