Warming trend coming this week

SUNDAY OCTOBER 31..6:07 am….

The wimpy storm that brought a few showers to the Tahoe Basin Friday and Saturday has mostly moved on to the north and east. In the end that system brought only a dusting of snow to areas above 7000 feet.

Today’s weather should be marked by continued cloudiness, this time from a system brushing past us as it takes most of its energy north of the Oregon border.

Once that low is to our east, an area of high pressure will build over the region, bringing above normal temperatures and clear skies to the Basin for most of the coming week. Look for highs by Wednesday to be in the mid-60s around the Lake, 10 to 15 degrees above normal for early November.

The forecast is muddled on when this warming trend will end. A low pressure system is forming in the Gulf of Alaska and under normal conditions would be headed our way. But it seems likely to split apart as it bangs up against that ridge later this week. If that happens, next weekend will be fair and warm. A more powerful storm with the potential to push the high to our east is in the long range forecast for a week from Monday. But we all know the nature of the long-range forecast: don’t count on it yet.

Instead, stay tuned here and we will let you know when the next big change is coming.

Light rain, light snow today

SATURDAY OCTOBER 30…7:07 am….

A low pressure system that’s been idling off the coast of California for several days is moving inland this morning, bringing rain to the Central Valley and foothills and light snow to the Sierra.

The system’s core sagged far to the south before moving east, and the heaviest precipitation has been focused south of Tahoe. That will continue to be the case today, as the best chance for snow will be in Alpine and Mono counties. Tahoe should still see some rain and, above 7000 feet, some scattered snow showers. The snow level might even drop down to close to 6000 feet. But we won’t be getting any serious accumulations.

Another storm system is moving into the Pacific Northwest but is expected to only brush past us to the north. We’ll get some cloud cover and cool temperatures but no precipitation.

After that a ridge of high pressure is forecast to build over the region, bringing dry and warmer weather to Tahoe through at least the middle of next week.

Stay tuned for updates.

Rain, light snow possible tonight

FRIDAY OCTOBER 29…9:07 am….

A very slow moving trough of low pressure that has been sitting off the Northern California coast for two days is finally moving inland today and will likely spread rain and snow into the Sierra late tonight.

The system is losing its punch as it moves south and east, however, and the showers are expected to be light and scattered. Snow levels should begin around 8000 feet and then fall to near 6000 feet overnight. The forecast calls for a couple of inches of snow above 7000 feet by Saturday afternoon. Areas south of Tahoe, including Mono County, could see a bit more.

A second storm system moving into Northern California on Sunday is expected to stay mostly to the north of Tahoe, bringing us cloud cover but not much else.

One that system moves east, a ridge of high pressure will build across the west, keeping Tahoe dry and warmer through Wednesday.

Stay tuned for updates.
