Light snow possible Thursday

TUESDAY NOVEMBER 30…

Tahoe’s weather picture for the rest of this week remain muddled. But it does not look as if any major storms are in the offing.

A trough setting up off the Pacific Coast is poised to send several ways of energy into the western US. But a split flow in the jet stream makes it difficult to say how much of that moisture will reach Northern California and Nevada. The one thing we do know is that temperatures are rising and are pretty much back to normal for this time of year.

The first system out of the Gulf of Alaska, moving south today, looks destined to stay far to our north. The next one, on Thursday and Friday, is forecast to have a greater chance of dropping some precipitation onto Tahoe. But even if it does, we won’t see a major snow storm. Probably less than a foot of snow, if that.

Into the weekend the picture is even murkier. One forecast model shows a system crossing the Sierra Saturday and Sunday. Another has the low staying far off the coast and drifting into Southern California. It is too soon to tell which scenario will play out. But the trend has been for a drier outlook as the forecast takes on more clarity.

Stay tuned for updates as conditions change.

Unsettled weather ahead

MONDAY NOVEMBER 29…

The Tahoe Basin is between storms this morning and will remain so for the next few days. The weather pattern for the next 5 to 10 days is very unsettled at this point, and the various computer forecasting models are in conflict. But it seems likely we will have some rain and snow in the short term and possibly a big storm or two by next week.

A low pressure system moving out of the Gulf of Alaska today is expected to brush past us late Tuesday or early Wednesday without leaving much precipitation behind.

Another system due Thursday or Friday looks more promising. While it could split in two as it approaches the California coast, it has a chance to spread snow across the Sierra and the Tahoe region.

The trough carrying that storm our way, if it turns inland, could bring a pretty big storm to Tahoe over the weekend. But the models have been trending against that scenario, showing the low pressure system hanging well off the coast and sliding to the south, keeping the weekend dry.

The one thing all the models seem to be pointing toward is a period of wet and snowy weather by the middle of next week. Whatever happens between now and then, that development will remain the one to keep your eye on.

Stay tuned for updates as conditions change.

Clear and cold today, 16 inches-plus of new snow

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 28…5:19 am…

The latest in a series of strong, cold pre-December storms has left the Tahoe Basin after depositing about 16 inches of snow at 7000 feet and even more at the highest elevations of the region.

Today and Monday should be clear and cold in the wake of the storm and in advance of the next disturbance, which is due by around Wednesday.

The next storm will be a bit warmer and probably not as big of a snow producer, but it might be followed by another next weekend. Tahoe’s weather will remain unsettled into early December.

Stay tuned for updates as conditions change.
