Next storm due Tuesday night

MONDAY FEB. 28…..5:22 AM…
Tahoe is in for a week of unsettled weather ahead.
Most of the Basin should see cloud cover and high winds today as a storm system skirts past us to the north. But we’ll see little if any precipitation from this one south of Interstate 80.
The next storm will be more significant. A low pressure system building in the Gulf of Alaska will sag south on Tuesday and bring rain and snow to the Tahoe region. Snow levels will be high at first, perhaps above 6000 feet, before dropping as the front moves through on Wednesday. The heaviest snow will probably be during the day on Wednesday. This storm has the potential to dump more than a foot of new snow above 7000 feet.
Snow showers could linger into Thursday but skies should clear by Friday ahead of another storm due next weekend. The early forecast on that one is for very warm and wet conditions. We could see snow levels rising above 7000 feet depending on how the warm Pacific moisture mixes with the cold polar jet from the north.
Stay tuned for details as these storms approach.

Clear, warmer today

SUNDAY FEB. 27…..7:22 AM…
Today will be another beautiful day in Tahoe, with clear skies and slightly warmer temperatures than Saturday. But there’s more stormy weather ahead.
Three storm systems are currently in the forecast for the week ahead.
The first is unlikely to bring much if any precip to the Tahoe Basin. It will skirt the region Monday and Tuesday, bringing some cloud cover, winds and a slight chance of showers. But most of the snow should remain north of the Interstate 80 corridor.
The second, more powerful system is on track for Wednesday and Thursday. This low will approach from the Pacific and will be warmer and wetter than the two cold Canadian storms we have had in the past week. Still too early to pin down snow amounts, but it has the potential to deliver a foot or more of new snow, with snow levels in the 5000 to 6000 foot range. They might be even higher briefly at the start of the storm and then drop as the front pushes through.
After a brief break it looks as if we will be in line for another storm next weekend, perhaps Saturday night into Sunday.
Stay tuned for details.

Clear and cold; more coming next week

SATURDAY FEB. 26…..7:26AM…
Tahoe is officially buried, folks. And there is more to come in the week ahead.
We got another 18 inches here at 7000 feet in the past 24 hours, bringing the storm total to right around three feet. The resorts are reporting an extra foot at the peaks at 8000 feet and above. That’s a very credible estimate.
Now the storm has moved mostly south, with clear skies over north Tahoe and a few clouds still lingering to the south. Temperatures dipped below zero overnight in the mountain valleys and into the low single digits at the highway passes. They will warm a bit today but highs will still be 20 degrees or more below normal. Sunday will be warmer while remaining a bit below normal.
We might see a few clouds Monday and a chance of light snow as a system passes to our north. Another, bigger storm looks to come our way mid week, probably Wednesday. This one will be warmer and wetter with snow levels possibly above 6000 or even 7000 feet at the start, then crashing to the foothills as the storm comes through.
After that, it appears we might get another one of these cold storms as an upper low pressure trough migrates from western Canada into the Gulf of Alaska and then spins some energy our way. If that happens, it would be sometime next weekend.
Remember our six week dry spell at the start of the year? Ancient history now.
