Warmer through Friday but weekend storm likely

THURSDAY MARCH 31 5:34 AM….

Tahoe’s weekend is going to be preceded by a couple of balmy days today and Friday as a ridge of high pressure allows temperatures to warm to 10 to 15 degrees above normal. With highs int he 80s in California’s Central Valley, the mountains will see daytime highs in the 60s at lake level and the 50s at the mountain passes. We probably won’t see lows below the freeing point tonight or Friday.

By late Friday, however, winds should be picking up ahead of a trough of low pressure moving out of the Gulf of Alaska. This system seems certain to lower our temperatures and bring some cloud cover, with a good possibility of rain and high elevation snow by Saturday afternoon.

Although the forecast models remained in conflict this morning, it does look like we have a decent chance for accumulating snow in the Tahoe region Saturday night and early Sunday morning before the storm moves east. Snow levels should drop to below 6000 feet as the front moves through.

Sunday should be partly cloudy as things begin to dry out, though we could see a brisk north wind. Monday looks dry with warmer temperatures.

Warmer today through Friday

WEDNESDAY MARCH 30 7:34 AM….

A ridge of high pressure building over the west is expected to bring clear skies and warm temperatures to the Tahoe Basin for the rest of the work week.

High temperatures should climb a little bit each day, with temperatures by Friday reaching 10 to 15 degrees above normal.

The ridge will begin to break down late Friday with the advance of a low pressure system out of the Pacific Northwest.

Forecast models are still showing two possible tracks for this system, and there is a chance it will miss us altogether and stay to the north. If it does track through Tahoe, this storm will be a warm one, at least initially, with snow levels well above 7000 feet on Saturday. We’ll likely see some rain on Saturday before snow levels drop as the front pushes through late Saturday and into Sunday morning. Snow levels would drop to close to 5000 feet Sunday morning.

Monday should be fair before another system comes our way early next week.

The longer range models, meanwhile, are hinting at a strong ridge of high pressure for later next week and a significant warming trend.

Cloudy today, then sunshine

TUESDAY MARCH 29 8:34 AM….

Spring is definitely here, and this week it is going to feel like it.

Tahoe might see some high clouds today as a low pressure system skirts past us to the north, bringing rain and snow to Lassen and the far northern Sierra but probably not as far south as Interstate 80.

By Wednesday the ridge of high pressure will really begin to dig into the Great Basin and put a lid on things, warming temperatures Thursday and Friday. Friday’s highs should be 10 to 15 degrees above normal.

The forecast is still showing a low pressure system approaching California on Saturday. But two models are in conflict about this storm’s effect on Tahoe. One has it coming in fairly cold and dropping several inches of snow on Tahoe Saturday afternoon. The other model shows the storm moving through Washington and Oregon but pretty much missing us. We will keep an eye on that discrepancy and keep you appraised as it resolves itself later this week.

For now, get ready to enjoy the sunshine.
