Beautiful bluebird day at Alpine. The snow was surprisingly good. Coverage on the groom was about 95 percent with a few rocks here and there and a stick or two. Firm base with a nice soft top in the morning. Rode a couple of laps on Summit before heading to Scotts and Lakeview. The little traverese from the top of Scott's to Lakeview was bony and dirty but we got through it. The snow on this side was softening up faster but still quite ridable. Returned in the afternoon and it was mashed potatoes. If I had been skiing I wouldn't have liked it much but no problem on the board….you can cut right through that stuff. Conditions on Roundhouse were good all day except for some patches where the groom “powder” was skied off and you had only clean hardpack. But those spots were small and scattered and we rode ride through them. It could be a lot worse given what kind of season it has been to date.

ALPINE MEADOWS …..from http://www.tetongravity.com/forums   North facing slopes off Summit were good through Monday (D-chutes, Perils, Low Beaver). The right side of Palisades 1 held the best snow for the Palisades. Sherwood and the High-T are soup by 11AM. Scott corns up nicely in the afternoon. Expert Shortcut, Counterweight Gully, etc, all good…..And oh yeah, the stash might still be hiding in the skier's right trees of Estelle Bowl. Deep fluff in there on Friday……

Alpine today 2/6

It was 3″ of not too heavy snow over a hard layer. Not quite dust on crust, but not heavy or thick enough to keep you above the old snow.

The North facing stuff did have softer old snow. It skied pretty well.

There were some pockets (2-3 turn worth) that were more like 5″ of new snow. I skied some fun untracked lines off Scott this afternoon. (not many people at the mtn today.)

It was snowing up on top of the mtn all afternoon, but it was not snowing at the bottom of the mtn.

The hikes and Sherwood were closed today (lower beaver was open). So with a little more snow and the hikes opening, tomorrow morning could be good. If neither happen, I would think it going to be more of a crud over bumps day.

ALPINE….FEB 7 11 AM …from Vanessa…..Summit Six is closed due to wind, tying up a lot of the other ski > lifts. We've been sticking to the Scott chair and finding some powder > there. Powder surprisingly good around the mountain, although some > spots towards the bottom are skiied out. …..Nothing good on Sherwood. Stay away.

Saturday found variable conditions. Good coverage on the groomed slopes and snow conditions good. Off piste, the previous soft, mushy stuff from our spring-like conditions froze solid, with a bit of the new powder nestled in the troughs of any bumps. Bottom of Beaver was pretty good. Sherwood was absolutely horrible–no wonder no one was there: Very firm and uneven, and any “powder” at the bottom was very heavy. Some good powder off of Scott toward Gentian. Hopefully these new storms will bring enough to cover all the inconsistencies and we can start over.

….Fun snow, weird storm cycle weather. Started off clear and cold. Blue Bird for the first 4 runs then and erie fog up on summit. Over on Scott looking back to summit was neat. Getting up into the fog it was coooold and the wind started blowing over the ridge smoothing things out. Then it started to snow again……crowds were minimal. Oh and one thing that was nice for a powder day was that the ENTIRE mountain opened at 9. Everyone scattered leaving some of the easy stuff such as d chutes and sisters that usually are the first to disappear still good on laps 4 and 5!

2009 Ski Season: Day 12

Location: Alpine Meadows
Conditions: Epic Powder, 28″ overnight, 6″ more during the day
Dat: 2/14/2009

Saturday marked the Bay Area Ski Bus's first trip to Alpine Meadows for the 2009 season. The conditions were epic: a whopping 29″ of snow in the morning report, and another 6″ during the day on top a huge storm total for the week. We were waste deep in powder by the first run.

Early that morning word came that legendary ski filmmaker Warren Miller was filming at Alpine. You know you're skiing the place to be when Warren Miller shows up! Also in the house were Jonny Moseley, Erol Kerr, and other Tahoe locals.

We hit Hot Wheels Gully for some fresh and went to the backside for some more.

Fresh Tracks at Alpine

What a day! Definitely the most snow I've skied at Tahoe and the most ever since Alaska.

Light snow, strong winds at top, but untracked powder is plentiful and unbelievably, no crowds.

ALPINE MEADOWS…..from http://www.unofficialalpine.com…..Sunshine, low winds, relatively warm temperatures and soft winter snow on the north facing slopes. Waterfall, D6, D7, Deer Camp, Counter Weight Gully, High Yellow, Palisades (East and West) and most of the other north facing runs were just right. There are moguls in these areas that have grown, but they are forgiving……

Snow was good on Saturday, especially the groomers, High Yellow and anything that hadn't been hit by the sun. Upper Beaver was not worth the hike as it was filled with thick crud. Sunday was wet and sloppy with rain pouring down at the base. Didn't bother to go up but it was probably snowing wet flakes at the top.

2/27 FROM http://www.tetongravity.com/forums….

Basically hiked Wolverine, Beaver, Estelle and Pond Rocks all morning. A lap in each. Good snow, chalky, but very grabby. Variable in parts where there would be a wind crust, but easily breakable to about 8-10 of pow. Actually wish I had my Megawatts instead of Goats.

Hit Sherwood way too late, so it was pretty baked by that time.

Last run was Couterweight Gully. Apparently no one skied that all day today, b/c I hit at 4:15, was in the shade, and all powder. I guess I was in the middle chute. Good sized sluffs on each turn.

2009 Ski Season: Day 17

Hi From Lake Tahoe

The day started off on a sour note when our Bay Area Ski Bus host was late to arrive in Santa Clara. We waited for her for 20 minutes then finally took off only to make 4 more stops on the trip to Tahoe City.

Stop 1: pick up more folks in San Francisco

Stop 2: pick up more folks in Oakland

Stop 3: pick up more folks in Walnut Creek

Stop 4: pick up lift tickets in Truckee

Finally, we made it to Alpine Meadows about 9:30 AM.

I was on promo duty so I helped my main man Tom carry what seemed like a 100 pound plus tent through the parking lot and up to the base of the mountain. Ordinarily, it would not have been a big deal but in ski boots, walking across a parking lot, carrying skis, poles, and a 100 pound tent is not the best way to start out the day. After finally erecting this monster, I was anxious to get in a milk run. Tom and i hit Hot Wheels and I went into the gully in search of pow.

I found it. I ripped my way down the gully and back to the Hot Wheels lift where we met Jodi for another lap on Hot Wheels.

We headed to the backside and took a few runs off Lakeview Chair. As the chair's name implies, it offers some of the best scenery the mountain has to offer. See above.

I had an awesome wipeout off of Sherwood Express. I was mach schnell down a groomer when I spotted some fresh powpow off to the side. I went into the powder field without slowing down. My skis started to grip the snow but I was not able to make any proper turns. When I came to a slight embankment, I knew it was trouble. My left ski dug into the snow and popped off. I kept going full speed ahead. Yardsale. It was fun though. Back at the bottom, Jodi knocked a huge clump of snow off my helmet, a dead-giveaway that an accident had occurred on my last run.

We hit the Alpine Bowl later that afternoon which showed evidence of avalanche debris in the form of huge snow boulders. Roundhouse provided the rest of the afternoons fun and we wound down around 4:00 PM after a full day of skiing.

3/10…The morning air was cold today, but it did not take long to warm to a tolerable degree. I think we began the day just below 20 degrees and hit highs into the 40's at the base. It was warmer in the upper elevations than in the valleys. A picture perfect sky helped everyone's attitude, as did the lack of wind at the summit. Of course the groomers were splendid, but off piste was just as good this morning…..

ALPINE MEADOWS 3/13 ..from http://www.tetongravity.com.. Alpine today was great. ..corny groomers on sherwood. High-T wasn't quite ready when I hit it, but it wasn't too bad. The north facing steeps are skiing REALLY good. Went up to keyhole with a couple other mags and gapered a hop turn and lost a ski, but somehow didn't go over the rocks….

ALPINE MEADOWS….3/24 from http://www.unofficialalpine.co…..nbsp;  We found plenty of lines off the Sherwood lift this morning, avoiding the higher winds at the top of Alpine Bowl Chair (Summit was not operating in the morning). Sherwood Cliffs, Our Father, and Expert Short Cut offered good deep powder turns. A little hiking took us to the top of Lakeview Chair (not operating) where we found Outer Limits to have a few tracks, but plenty of fresh powder. Skiing is excellent. I spoke to a few people that skied F Tree, and High T that reported excellent powder. The pack should be super tomorrow…..
