from tetongravity.com/forums

“Squaw was fun today but the upper mountain snow is getting hammered by damn east winds. Also, it was hard to see where the good powdery snow were the blown off hard urfaces were. Example Mainline, Cheesegrader went like 30ish feet to what look like soft wind blown, but it was actually firm unbreakable stuff, back slapped nice and polish donuted. Palisades were soft but east wind in the face kind of brutal. Light towers, CII firm scratchy in spots….”

2:15: KT is still skiing great. The sun is very strong today which will be changing conditions over the next few days.

11:30: good skiing off KT. Keep an eye out for Tim Polick who is sending the Ice Fall off the fingers.

The sun is playing with the snow. There is some sun crust is spots and what looks to be the first day of a corn cycle.

On the 28th I was surprised at how much fun I had at Squaw.  The snow was patchy, but it was deep enough to be fun here and there.  The wind was a problem, but hey, anything is better than the last few weeks.  Cool

*Praying for more snow*

…..Just three or four inches on top of the hard pack at the base and midmountain. Top of Granite Chief had a little more and the base was more forgiving. We still need a lot more snow

It was snowing off and on throughout the day at Squaw.  We skied Granite in the morning, and it was practly empty.  In the afternoon we hit up Headwall and Olympic Lady.  The best snow we found all day was on Oly.  Fun day, but still spring conditions.

FROM SCOTT AT SQUAW FEB 8….

….SQUAW VALLEY…..Visibility much improved Sunday vs. Saturday — no fog, but extremely flat light that made it tough to judge the snow. Luckily conditions on the trails was consistent — very little patchy ice except at the top of exposed slopes. The snow from a couple nights earlier holding up nicely. Very windy early in the day, but Shirley Lake was a refuge. Upper Siberia scraped clean at the top, but a blast from there down to the lift. Lines not overly obnoxious for a Sunday in February…….

Just getting home from Squaw, it was awesome up there.  Today was the best day I've had all year.  We got on the hill at about 9:30 and hopped in the massive line to get up KT.  Our first run was one of the best of the day.  We traversed out way passed Olympic Lady and got face shots all the way down.  Upper mountian took a while to open, Headwall was having maintenance problems but when they finally got it open it was awesome.  We only took a few runs on head wall before we headed back to KT.  In the afternoon KT was empty so we got a bunch of quick laps.  Shot a little double stager off the fingers but the ice below the snow was a big factor.  A few more feet before I feel comfortable to go really big.

I'm going to go ahead and say that today was the deepest and lightest snow I have seen in a few years. I was on the fattest skis they make and I was choking every turn on my first run. Fist chair was well worth the wait. DEEP blower pow on West Face. I really had a tough time seeing and breathing. It's been a while since thats happened. Things got better as the day went on. Headwall was pretty sweet until 330. Getting wind buffed on the face.

….classic squaw day today… absolutely righteous windbuff everywhere. no one else will agree, but for me personally today's snow was better than yesterday's. any one of 15 different runs were easily the fastest, most effortless turns i've made all year… by a mile. i figured i was gonna just poke around and take pictures, all tired and sore from yesterday… ended up skiing warp speed all day…..

Just getting home from squaw, we got out a little late and just lapped KT all day.  Seemed like there was about 8 inches of fresh on the ground.  Tomorow should be great.

from Andrew S via email:

SQUAW VALLEY. ..Squaw delivered an epic morning for President's day. By the end of the day there was new snow and strong wind covering the tracks we lay down in the morning.

The trees under red dog had some rocks under 1-2 feet of powder but  after the additional snow tonight the whole mountain should be in perfect shape.  It was getting a bit warm at lower elevations (wet lift seats) but up high it was plenty cold.

2009 Ski Season: Day 14

Location: Squaw Valley
Conditions: Groomed, moguls, bluebird
Date: 2/21

Saturday, we hit Squaw on the Bay Area Ski Bus for the first day of a two day trip. My Volkl Mantra 184's needed some tuning so I dropped them off at the base ski shop for some welds, wax, and edge. I took the funitel to Gold Coast and hit up the demo shop for some boards for they day.

I was going to get the 2009 Manras in a 191 if they had them. I talked to the demo shop guy about what to chose for the day:

Demetri: Hey, my skis are at the base getting repaired and I need to demo something for today.

Shop Guy: Sounds like a great idea

D: Do you have the Mantras?

SG: Yup, sure

D: What size?

SG: 170, 177, 184

D: No 191s?

SG: nope

D: I actually have the Mantras, is there anything else I should try?

SG: Head Mojos, they are the Mantra killer

D: Seriously considers punching the shop guy in the face for dissing his Mantras. Okay, I'll give them a shot. We'll see. I'll take the 187s.

I liked the skis. They were heavy pigs though. I found myself tightening down the boot buckles to get a bit more control over the monsters. I liked the 187 length. The were great in anything tracked up.

We hit the whole mountain that day. We started out on taking Red Dog over to Squaw Creek for a few laps. We did Shirley Lake, Granite Chief, Gold Coast Express and a few rides on the funitel. Conditions were pretty good all around the mountain with lots of moguls especially in Siberia Bowl.

Squaw was crazy fun today.  KT wasn't opened 'till about 10, but when it opened it was well worth the wait.  There was at least three feet of fresh on the ground, and we got face shiots all day.  Upper mountain didn't open today, which means that tomorrow will be just as sick as today… Too bad I have school.

I heard that there was a pretty big avalanche at the top of Shirley Lake.  Apparently it had a ten foot crown.  Make sure you wear a becon if you're going skiing tomorrow.

Conditions are good — skiied over but still soft. Flurries in the morning, sunny in the afternoon. Clouds rolled back in around 4 p.m. KT22 and Headwall have some pockets of untouched powder, the moguls are fluffy, but started crusting over around 4

.Squaw was packed today, like apparently every place else in Tahoe. Seems like all of NorCal decided to come check out the big pow and maybe get in their last great ski of the season before they turn to gardening and mowing lawns. There were lkong lines and the lifts, huge moguls and the last of the powder has been pretty much trampled….Hard to believe after the week we had but I got to say it: we need more snow!…..
