Heat should peak on Friday

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 2…5:22 AM…Tahoe’s weather is heating up just in time for the Labor Day weekend, the traditional end of the summer season in the Basin even if the calendar still gives us three more weeks til fall.

An area of high pressure over the west has begun to bake us below its lid, raising temperatures a few degrees each day. That trend is forecast to continue through Friday, when highs should peak in the 80s around the Lake and the 70s near the mountain passes.

A trough of low pressure of the Pacific Coast will then start to make itself felt here. The trough will swing through the Pacific Northwest over the weekend and bring rain to Washington and Oregon and perhaps far northern California. But we should remain dry in Tahoe. We will get brushed by the southern boundary of the cooler air moving east, and that should moderate our temperatures Saturday and especially Sunday.

Once that trough moves through the forecast is a little uncertain. One computer models shows a secondary wave that could be as cool as the one we saw last weekend. But a competing forecast shows a return to more seasonal weather. We won’t know more until the track of that low establishes itself a little better.

Warming trend through Friday

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 1…7:22 AM…September arrives today with a warming trend, thanks to an area of high pressure spreading from the California coast toward the Nevada desert.

We should see temperatures climb a few degrees each day through Friday, when they will peak at 5 to 10 degrees above normal for this time of year.

A trough of low pressure out of the Pacific Northwest will try to nudge that high pressure to the east over the weekend, but we might not see and feel the effects until Sunday. By early next week Tahoe should be in the midst of a new cooling trend, back to normal or perhaps a bit below.

First warmer, then cooler

TUESDAY AUGUST 31…6:22 AM…Moderation will be the theme for Tahoe’s weather over the next several days.

A slowly building warming trend is in the offing at the moment as an area of high pressure builds over the west. Each of the next few days, through Thursday, should be warmer than the last, with temperatures topping out at just above normal for early September by the end of the week. We will likely see some east or northeast winds, with gusts along the ridges topping out at around 30 mph. Dry conditions should prevail.

Temperatures are forecast to peak on Friday before we see the reverse — a slow cooling trend. The ridge of high pressure will be kicked east as a trough of low pressure forms over the Pacific Northwest and moves south and east and begins to affect the Sierra’s weather. Temperatures should cool a tick or two over the weekend — not as much as last weekend but probably below normal for Labor Day.

So, first a little warmer, then a little cooler. Sounds good to us.
